Zeljko Pajki, Dejan Jovanovi and Zoran Ognjanovi of the Matematicki Institut in Beograd produced their paper A Z39.50 Gateway Implementation describing a web interface to a Z39.50 server that accesses a MySQL database.
Their paper explains:
This software makes it possible to connect virtually any database that supports SQL queries, making it a Z39.50 server. Creation of Z39.50 targets becomes just a matter of configuration.
